⁂ The first is "the first appearance of some of... Patmore's most important work. Only 250 copies were [privately] printed, of which Patmore, having sent some out privately, destroyed over a hundred of the remainder." - Hayward.
The missing leaf normally reads "From the author" on the recto, presumably de Vere thought it prudent to remove this when presenting this copy to Dowden. Aubrey de Vere (1814-1902), Irish poet and critic. Edward Dowden (1843-1913), Irish critic and poet.
