⁂ Merle Armitage (1893-1975), pioneering book designer and typographer; author on the arts; theatre, dance, and opera impresario; friend and associate of, among many others, George Gershwin, Anna Pavlova, Martha Graham, Stravinsky, and Jacob Zeitlin; bibliophile, art collector, editor; a fixture in the California art scene.
William Webb Clary (1889-1971) educator and author; benefactor of the Claremont Colleges in California; donated his large collection of books on Oxford to the colleges' Honnold Library.
The inscription, to the front free endpaper, reads: "To my friend | Merle Armitage | with high esteem | from | William W Clary | Oct 12, 1956".
