The Dun Cow was written as a response to attacks on Landor's friend Dr. Samuel Parr in Guy's Porridge Pot (most likely by Landor's brother Robert Eyres, see next lot). John Bartlam (1771-1823) was Parr's pupil who later became his companion and amanuensis.
