⁂ The first is a defence of Jean Chastel, a Jesuit student and member of the Catholic League, who attempted and failed to assassinate the Protestant Henry IV in 1594. These sermons by Boucher were publicly burned and forced his exile from Paris. The second is a satire on Descartes' theories regarding animals and souls, resulting in the author's incarceration. It includes 'Lettre a Madame la Comtesse D⁂ [by Fr. La Chesnaye des Bois] pour servir de Supplément à l'amusement Philosophique sur le langage des Bêtes'. The last is a vehement attack on the Jesuits which first appeared in 1656-57 and was ordered to be burnt on the orders of the Congregation of the Index.
