[Sorbière (Samuel)] Relation d'un Voyage en Angleterre..., title with woodcut printer's device of a sphere, long contemporary ink inscription on front free endpaper, light spotting or browning, contemporary vellum, soiled and stained, 12mo, Cologne, Pierre Michel, 1666; and another, 12mo & 8vo (2)
⁂ Second or third edition of Sorbière's account of his travels in England in 1663 (this issue without a plate) during which he met several scientists including Robert Boyle, and was present at one of the earliest meetings of the Royal Society. His criticisms of English institutions caused great offence and Louis XIV diplomatically ordered the book to be suppressed.
