Native Americans.- Horn (Georg) De originibus Americanis libri quatuor, first edition, title in red and black with woodcut device, water-stained, title slightly frayed at fore-edge, contemporary vellum, rubbed and stained, upper joint split at head, [Sabin 33014], 8vo, The Hague, Adrian Vlacq, 1652.
⁂ Learned work concerning the origins of the Native Americans and challenging the ideas of Hugo Grotius who, based on linguistics, had claimed descent of Central Americans from Norsemen, Peruvians from the Chinese and the people of the Yucatan from the Ethiopians. In contrast Horn suggested that those on the eastern side of the continent were descended from the Scythians, Phoenicians and Carthaginians, and those on the western side from the Chinese. There is also information on customs such as marriage and burial, tales and legends, and mention of California, Mexico, Florida, New England, Peru, Brazil and Nicaragua.
