Description

Baglione (Giovanni) Le Vite de' Pittori Scultori et Architetti, dal Pontificato di Gregorio XIII del 1572. In sino a'tempi di Papa Urbano Ottavo nel 1642, first edition, engraved frontispiece after Jo.Ballion and portrait of the author (often missing including Macclesfield copy sold in 2004), portrait folding at foot, with additional leaf in signature Z mounted on stubs and causing error to subsequent pagination, with privilege leaf at end, a few contemporary marginalia, Philip Pouncey's copy with his neat pencil signature to front free endpaper and a few notes to margins, light browning to some leaves, short tear to foot of Qq1, small stain to privilege leaf, engraved bookplate of Thos. Brand and book-label of John Gere, contemporary vellum, a little rubbed and soiled, slight wear to upper edges and corners, 4to, Rome, Andrea Fei, 1642.

⁂ Scarce and important work on the lives of Baroque artists, mostly Roman, including the Caraccis, Caravaggio, Bernini and also Rubens and Goltzius.

Philip Pouncey (1910-90), art historian and authority on Italian drawings, co-author (with John Gere) of Italian Drawings: Artists Working in Rome c.1550 to c.1640.
