Online Sale: Books and Works on Paper

Lots 1-25 are the property of the late Claude Boisset (née Astier) who was born in Paris in 1928.  Her father, a doctor and politician, was a collector of beautiful things and books.  It was under his influence, in the mid-1940s, that Claude herself became interested in books, their bindings and history.  In the late 1960s, when her children were growing up, she joined a bookbinding class taught by Sally Lou Smith in London where she was living (her husband Bernard was working at the French Embassy).  She went on to win prizes in the Designer Bookbinder Competition which she later helped to organise. In the early 1970s she studied at Camberwell School of Arts for a diploma in Archive Preservation and Repair.  Her final thesis was on A French bookbinder in London Auguste Marie de Caumont (1743-1839), an article which was published in The Book Collector (Summer 1981).  She continued to add to her already significant collection of books on books, binding and printing when she and Bernard moved to Brussels and in their retirement in France.
