⁂ The Chevalier d'Éon was a French diplomat, spy and freemason, who had androgynous physical attributes and excellent mimicry skills. For 33 years from 1777 he dressed as a woman and claimed to be female, managing to infiltrate the court of Empress Elizabeth of Russia in a woman's costume. Upon d'Éon's death doctors' examinations found him to be male.
