Herbal.- Rösslin (Eucharias) Kreutterbuch, vonn aller Kreuter, Bäum, Gesteud unn Frücht, numerous woodcuts within text, all hand-coloured in a contemporary hand, woodcut initials, lacking F2, G6, h6 and r8 (final f.), several ff. torn with significant loss (including lower title), stained, some spotting or mostly light foxing, [Nissen, BBI, 1668; Durling 3814 (incomplete)], folio, Frankfurt, Christian Egenolph, [?1546] bound after Cardano (Girolamo) De Subtilitate, first edition, woodcut marginal diagrams and illustrations, woodcut historiated initials, D6 blank, lacks title, stained, some colour pencil scribbles, some spotting or mostly light foxing, [Adams C668; Dibner 139; Norman 401; Sinkankas 1145], Nuremberg, Joannes Petreius, 1550, together 2 works in 1 vol., attractive ornately blind-stamped pigskin over wooden boards, includes a border of saints and ?mythical creatures, spine in compartments, metal clasps, corners worn, soiled and rubbed, folio sold not subject to return.

⁂ A handsomely coloured, but sadly defective copy of a rare edition of this herbal. The woodcuts are mostly reduced copies of Fuchs, Brunfels and others.

The second work is the first edition of Cardano's most important work, that Dibner considers 'Represents the most advanced representation of physical knowledge up to his time and the idea that all creation is in progressive development'. It includes sections on cosmology, machines, mechanics, alchemy, the occult, minerals, metals and cryptology, amongst many others.
