Gilks (Thomas, fl. 1840-1875) An album of proof wood-engraved book illustrations, approximately 150 works, including natural history subjects, landscapes, illustrations of buildings and ruins, frontispieces, genre, travel, and portraits, several after Sir John Gilbert, Leech, Clayton, and others, some possibly illustrations for 'Comic English Grammar' and 'Everything about Shakespeare', proof wood-engravings, on thin laid paper, several with manuscript re-working and annotations by the engraver, neatly tipped-in and presented over 45 leaves, various sizes, largest 170 x 220 mm. (6 3/4 x 8 3/4 in), some occasional spotting and browning, minor handling creases, one or two with sheet loss, several loose, modern boards, printed label to spine, 4to, [circa 1840-1875]

⁂ Gilks was a wood engraver, draughtsman, illustrator and writer on engraving. He published 'A Sketch of the Origin and Progress of the Art of Wood-Engraving', circa 1868, and illustrated the book with his own work.
