Description

Metcalf (John Henry, herald painter, of London & Northallerton, Yorkshire, d. 1907) [Armorial Sketches], 894 coats of arms on 113pp., excluding blanks, most in monochrome watercolour wash, 14pp. at end in with watercolour wash coats of arms in another hand, captions in red and black, ruled in red throughout, a few tears and some slight staining to edges, browned, some soiling at beginning and end, bookplate and autograph note of William Ballard Turner on fly-leaf, contemporary half calf, slightly rubbed and repaired, rebacked in matching calf, folio, n.d. [19th century].

⁂ Provenance: William Ballard Turner (1845-1917), antiquary and natural history. "These Armorial Sketches (894 in number) are the work of a well-known heraldic artist, John Henry Metcalf, of London & after of Northallerton, Yorks. Died 1907. They are evidently plates intended for some heraldic work, the nature of which or its title I have never been able to discover. I bought them (in dilapidated condition, minus two pages and without cover) at a book-shop in London, Oct. 1875. W.B.T."
