Tyndale's Bible.- Bible, English. [The newe Testament of our Sauiour Jesu Christe], The Leicester Harmsworth copy, [Tyndale's version], black letter, numerous 79 woodcuts and numerous woodcut initials and decorations, 274ff. only of 340ff., lacks title (supplied in later facsimile) and all before C3, lacks C8-D1, D8, 2N7, P5-8, and all after R1, C3 extensively soiled, edges torn and repaired, 2 woodcut with holes, other ff. with some some tears (a few repaired), mostly in margins, browned, some blotching, a few ff. with small ink stains, early signature in lower margin, but most ff. in good condition, later endpapers, old bookseller's description on front pastedown, numerous inscriptions on front endpapers relating to provenance, 17th century panelled calf, slightly rubbed, corners bumped, re-backed in modern calf, new slip-case, [Herbert 99; STC 2867. Luborsky & Ingram, English Illustrated Books 2867], 4to, [London, Richard Jugge], [1552]; sold not subject to return.

First edition of Tyndale's version with Jugge's revisions and the first of 3 illustrated quarto editions of Tyndale's version. "This handsomely printed revision by the publisher, Richard Jugge, is lavishly illustrated with nearly sixty new cuts in the Gospels and a large title-page portrait of the young king, who awarded the publisher a license to print the book . . . The narrative cuts in the Gospels are apparently the first made specifically for the text of an English Bible"--Luborsky & Ingram, English Illustrated Books.
