Description

Louise Bourgeois (1911-2010)

Ex-Libris

Offset-lithographic bookplate printed in colours, 2005, initialed and numbered from the edition of 300 in pencil, on wove paper, the full sheet, 117 x 80mm (4 5/8 x 3 1/4in) (unframed)

As mother and artist, Bourgeois has drawn great inspiration from her experiences of her own body during pregnancy, birth, lactation and menstruation, with many of her works exploring themes around motherhood. Here the artist offers us an intimate portrait of mother and child. Her print hints that their identities are deeply and privately connected during pregnancy, offering us an impossible portrait of her young child still in the womb. Her bulging belly and the baby's position, however, reveal her body is close to birth. It is an exciting but bittersweet realisation, as birth will on the one hand sever this irreplaceable bond, but on the other will allow the child to enter the world and begin their own journey to becoming independent .
