⁂ Includes 'The Morals of Chess' by Benjamin Franklin (pp.141-148 in vol.1), first published in The Columbian Magazine in December 1786. As one of the first Americans to play chess he advocates playing the game to develop skills, 'The Game of Chess is not merely an idle amusement; several very valuable qualities of the mind, useful in the course of human life, are to be acquired and strengthened by it, so as to become habits ready on all occasions...'.
Provenance: Sir George Douglass (engraved armorial bookplate). Douglass was a subscriber to the 1790 edition of Philidor.
