⁂ The first work includes references to slavery; the second concerns the shipwreck of an American ship and the crew's resulting appalling hardship, firstly on a trek through the Sahara desert and then through their capture and enslavement by Arabs. On his release the author dedicated himself to campaigning against slavery. This account was a great influence on Abraham Lincoln and his ideas on slavery.
