Bede, the Venerable. Single leaf containing parts of Bede's Homily 35 on the Feast of St. John, decorated manuscript on parchment, in Latin, single leaf, text block 325 x 200 mm, double column, each 28 lines, written in an early northern gothic hand, headings in red, recto with three-line elaborate penwork initial 'C' (opening: 'Contemplativa vita est cum longo') in blue and red, with extension to the half of page, four-line initial 'I' (opening: 'In enim etenim quod ait Petro'') painted in red, verso with three-line penwork initial 'S' (opening 'Speculativa felicits quae hic inchoatur'), with extension, rather faded, capitals touched in red, recovered from a binding and possibly folded in half, small losses affecting a few letters, some lines rather erased, staining mostly to verso, c. 431 x 301 mm., possibly Germany, 13th century; together with A rectangular fragment from a leaf from Donatus' De Partibus orationis Ars minor, decorated manuscript on parchment, in Latin, remains of double column, each with 7 lines of text, written in a very early gothic hand, in two different sizes, two-line initial 'M' (opening: 'Magister nomen appellatiuum') painted in red, and holding a bauble, capitals touched in red, one heading written in red, folded in half, this fragment was re-used in a binding hence rather scuffed and stained, script faded in places, c.75 x 82mm., 12th century (2)

⁂ The first leaf contains a large portion from Homily 35 by the Venerable Bede, from a large-size finely decorated manuscript. The penwork initial on the recto is especially handsome and quite well-preserved.
