*** An exceptional medieval anthology. The first five printed works represent, with one of the manuscripts, the theoretical part of this poetic collection, while the following printed works and the other three manuscripts contain, faithfully to the engraved motto on the clasps, some very significant examples of medieval Greek and Latin poetics. The Musaeus includes the first two woodcuts ever printed by Aldus - an 'epic in miniature,' which had a considerable influence on Renaissance and Baroque literature: "The book is illustrated with two woodcuts, somewhat 'primitive' in style and of no particular artistic pretensions. In both of them the setting is the same: two fortified towns of Sestos and Abydos with the Hellespont in between. The Musaeus includes the first two woodcuts ever printed by Aldus - an 'epic in miniature,' which had a considerable influence on Renaissance and Baroque literature: \"The book is illustrated with two woodcuts, somewhat 'primitive' in style and of no particular artistic pretensions. In both of them the setting is the same: two fortified towns of Sestos and Abydos with the Hellespont in between. Modus versificando.- Extraordinary sammelband of 21 works collected by a German humanist, comprising 4 incunables, 13 post-incunables and 4 manuscript works, including: the Latin part of Musaeus' Opusculum de Herone & Leandro, Venice, Aldus Manutius, 1497 (with 2 woodcut illustrations); Chrysoloras' Erotemata, Strasburg, Johann Knobloch, 1516; the fourth and fifth books of Gaza's Grammar, Leipzig, Valentin Schumann, 1516, Murmellius' Artis versificatorie rudimenta, Leipzig, Valentin Schumann, 1511 (not recorded in bibliographies of German 16th-century editions); Mombritius' De dominica passione libri sex, Leipzig, Jakob Thanner, [after 3rd January] 1499, (the only edition printed in Germany in the 15th Century) and Politianus' Silva, Leipzig, Jakob Thanner, 1512, copious contemporary ink marginalia in red and black ink, library stamp erased from title of each work, contemporary German blind-stamped half pigskin over wooden boards (from c.1520), spine with 3 raised bands, with undamaged original metal and leather clasps with manuscript title "Modus versificando", 4to, 230 x 170mm., v.p., c.1492-1519.
*** An exceptional medieval anthology. The first five printed works represent, with one of the manuscripts, the theoretical part of this poetic collection, while the following printed works and the other three manuscripts contain, faithfully to the engraved motto on the clasps, some very significant examples of medieval Greek and Latin poetics. The Musaeus includes the first two woodcuts ever printed by Aldus - an 'epic in miniature,' which had a considerable influence on Renaissance and Baroque literature: "The book is illustrated with two woodcuts, somewhat 'primitive' in style and of no particular artistic pretensions. In both of them the setting is the same: two fortified towns of Sestos and Abydos with the Hellespont in between. In the first one Hero watches Leander swimming across the channel; in the second she leaps to her death. These are the first illustrations in a Greek book...» (Staikos, p. 328-329).

The Musaeus includes the first two woodcuts ever printed by Aldus - an 'epic in miniature,' which had a considerable influence on Renaissance and Baroque literature: "The book is illustrated with two woodcuts, somewhat 'primitive' in style and of no particular artistic pretensions. In both of them the setting is the same: two fortified towns of Sestos and Abydos with the Hellespont in between. The Musaeus includes the first two woodcuts ever printed by Aldus - an 'epic in miniature,' which had a considerable influence on Renaissance and Baroque literature: \"The book is illustrated with two woodcuts, somewhat 'primitive' in style and of no particular artistic pretensions. In both of them the setting is the same: two fortified towns of Sestos and Abydos with the Hellespont in between. Modus versificando.- Extraordinary sammelband of 21 works collected by a German humanist, comprising 4 incunables, 13 post-incunables and 4 manuscript works, including: the Latin part of Musaeus' Opusculum de Herone & Leandro, Venice, Aldus Manutius, 1497 (with 2 woodcut illustrations); Chrysoloras' Erotemata, Strasburg, Johann Knobloch, 1516; the fourth and fifth books of Gaza's Grammar, Leipzig, Valentin Schumann, 1516, Murmellius' Artis versificatorie rudimenta, Leipzig, Valentin Schumann, 1511 (not recorded in bibliographies of German 16th-century editions); Mombritius' De dominica passione libri sex, Leipzig, Jakob Thanner, [after 3rd January] 1499, (the only edition printed in Germany in the 15th Century) and Politianus' Silva, Leipzig, Jakob Thanner, 1512, copious contemporary ink marginalia in red and black ink, library stamp erased from title of each work, contemporary German blind-stamped half pigskin over wooden boards (from c.1520), spine with 3 raised bands, with undamaged original metal and leather clasps with manuscript title "Modus versificando", 4to, 230 x 170mm., v.p., c.1492-1519.
⁂ An exceptional medieval anthology. The first five printed works represent, with one of the manuscripts, the theoretical part of this poetic collection, while the following printed works and the other three manuscripts contain, faithfully to the engraved motto on the clasps, some very significant examples of medieval Greek and Latin poetics. The Musaeus includes the first two woodcuts ever printed by Aldus - an 'epic in miniature,' which had a considerable influence on Renaissance and Baroque literature: "The book is illustrated with two woodcuts, somewhat 'primitive' in style and of no particular artistic pretensions. In both of them the setting is the same: two fortified towns of Sestos and Abydos with the Hellespont in between. In the first one Hero watches Leander swimming across the channel; in the second she leaps to her death. These are the first illustrations in a Greek book...» (Staikos, p. 328-329).
