Author's Presentation copy, INSCRIBED by the Author and the Publisher. 1955. single volume, 8vo, (222 x 142mm), first edition, first impression, Limited edition of 100 copies, quarter cloth backed patterned paper boards, dust-jacket unclipped, priced 7s. 6d. on a small typed label to inner front flap, INSCRIBED by Philip Larkin on half-title, 'With kind regards to Eric Johnston from Philip Larkin', further INSCRIBED by George Hartley, co-founder of The Marvell Press, on Subscribers page, 'To Eric, 1 of a limited edition of 100 copies, George Hartley', the misprint of 'floor' for 'sea' in the first line of 'Absences' on page 38, printed on Abbey Mills antique laid paper, 43pp., with a 1pp. subscriber's order form loosely inserted.

Philip Larkin's first mature collection of poetry was published by subscription at The Marvell Press, a small operation run by the enterprising and persistent George and Jean Hartley. Larkin took an active part in the publication process of which the Hartleys knew very little in the early days. Provenance: The late Eric Selkirk Johnston, business manager of The Marvell Press, Hessle, East Yorkshire. Eric Johnston and his wife Audrey were associated with Philip Larkin and many authors within the Marvell Press family through their close friendship with George Hartley and lifelong friendship with Jean Hartley, co-founders of the Marvell Press in 1954. Eric and Audrey Johnston are included in the subscribers list.(Qty. 1).

Condition: clean bright boards, dust-jacket clean, chipped tail of spine (with small loss) a near fine copy.
