Montaigne (Michel de) The Essayes or Moral, Politike and Militarie Discourses, second English edition, woodcut decorations and initials, lacking title, engraved portrait and final blank, hole in dedication with loss of a few letters at head (repaired and supplied by hand), with title to second book (R1) bound as main title with Book number erased, replaced with signature R1-4 from 1603 first English edition (title to Book 2, Epistle & dedicatory verses) at beginning of Book 2, Qq5 & 6 defective at upper outer corner with loss to text (repaired and supplied in manuscript, ?from another slightly smaller copy and mounted on stubs), several markings, pointing fingers etc. in ink and pencil to margins, browned, a few rust-spots/holes, some soiling and water-staining, leaves brittle and occasionally frayed at edges, with slight loss, Logan Pearsall Smith's copy with his ink signature and long quotation on front free endpaper and notes at end, bookplate/book-label of Robert Gathorne-Hardy and Peter Scupham, contemporary vellum, red morocco label, rubbed and soiled, [STC 18042, but title ], folio, [by Melch. Bradwood and William Barret], 1613.
