Description

Zola (Émile) The "Assommoir" (The Prelude to "Nana"). A Realistic Novel, first English edition, half-title, additional pictorial title and 15 plates, 20pp. publisher's catalogue dated Sept. 1884 at rear, blue and white flowered endpapers, some spots to additional title, plate at p.382 loose, bookseller's ticket to foot of rear pastedown, hinges cracked, original brown cloth, lettered in gilt, upper cover pictorially blocked in red & gilt within black frame, spine little darkened, still overall a good copy, [Sadleir 3374], 1884; Nana: A Realistic Novel, initial & final advertisement f., half-title, frontispiece, title vignette and illustrations, of which 32 full-page, light spotting to first few ff., p.95 tear into text with fractional loss, a few leaves roughly opened with chipping to fore-margin, the odd patch of minor soiling, hinges cracked and with old glue repair but holding firm, original blue cloth, lettered in gilt, upper cover pictorially blocked in red & gilt within gilt frame, light discolouration to cloth, spine ends rubbed, [Sadleir 3375a], 1885, both lightly browned throughout, little rubbed with some fading to gilt, Vizetelly & Co., 8vo & Royal 8vo (2)

The first and second in the series of Vizetelly's English translations of Zola's works. The first mentioned, in brown cloth, is a variant of the plum cloth recorded by Sadlier. The second mentioned is the Royal 8vo edition, published the year after the first English edition (Sadleir 3375) and including many new illustrations.
