⁂ Lewis Charles Arlington (1859-1942), American who served as a customs officer in Shanghai, Fuzhou, Canton, and Hong Kong, and later the Chinese Postal Service. He wrote several books on China, most notably In Search of Old Peking with W.Lewisohn, 1935. In 1941 he was taken prisoner by the Japanese in Hong Kong and died during captivity.
Dulcie Hope Danby (1889-1991), writer on Chinese history and archaeology who lived with her businessman husband in Beijing in the 1930s; both were interned by the Japanese for two years during World War II.
