⁂ Marryat wrote the novel for his children who wanted a sequel to The Swiss Family Robinson, but he was forced to abandon a straight sequel because of "the ignorance or carelessness displayed in describing the vegetable and animal productions of the island on which the family had been wrecked" (Osborne).
