⁂ The first of Macdonald's books intended expressly for children. Horatio Joseph Lucas (1839-73), fourth son of Louis Lucas, a West India merchant. Lucas was educated at Brighton and University College London. He exhibited pictures at the Royal Academy and at the Salon in Paris. He was an accomplished musician and an active member of the London Jewish community.
