Macdonald (George) Dealings with the Fairies, first edition, presentation inscription to "Horatio Lucas. with the author's kindest regards" in the author's hand on half-title, illustrations by Arthur Hughes, 4pp. advertisements dated December 1866 at end, engraved frontispiece and 11 plates, marginal loss to pp.73-74, occasional spot and finger-soiling, mostly marginal, original variant cloth with border of upper cover blocked in black and a different gilt design to spine, recased, neat repairs to spine, g.e., 12mo, 1867.

⁂ The first of Macdonald's books intended expressly for children. Horatio Joseph Lucas (1839-73), fourth son of Louis Lucas, a West India merchant. Lucas was educated at Brighton and University College London. He exhibited pictures at the Royal Academy and at the Salon in Paris. He was an accomplished musician and an active member of the London Jewish community.
