Bannerman (Helen) The Story of Little Black Sambo, first edition, 27 colour illustrations, occasional spotting and finger-soiling, original green cloth, a few small spots to lower cover, spine slightly toned, spine ends and corner tips slightly bumped and rubbed, housed in a morocco-backed clamshell box, spine fractionally faded, 12mo, 1899.
⁂ An excellent copy of Bannerman's successful children's tale. It is believed that the compact size and overall design was part of the inspiration behind Beatrix Potter's stories.
Helen Bannerman (1862-1946) wrote this story during a long railway journey to India after having left two small daughters to be educated in her native Scotland. The author never intended the book for publication, but through the encouragement of her children and friends the manuscript was shown to E.V. Lucas who agreed to publish it as the fourth title in his series of 'The Dumpy Books for Children'".
