⁂ Greene and Diederich were close friends, with Diederich playing a pivotal role in alerting Greene to the atrocities of the Duvalier regime in Haiti. Greene’s brief visit to the country in 1963 offered him a glimpse of life under the dictatorship, and two years later, Diederich accompanied him on a journey along the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. These experiences became the foundation for his 1966 novel "The Comedians".
