Description

Greene (Graham) Collected Essays, browning, mostly marginal, extremities with some surface soiling, a little rubbed and bumped, signed letter of provenance dated 1990 loosely inserted, 1970 § Diederich (Bernard) Somoza, uncorrected proof copy, title working a little loose, covers toned, a few nicks at spine foot and some small stains to lower cover, New York, 1981, Graham Greene's copies, signed by him on titles, a few marks or spots, original wrappers, 8vo (2)

⁂ Greene and Diederich were close friends, with Diederich playing a pivotal role in alerting Greene to the atrocities of the Duvalier regime in Haiti. Greene’s brief visit to the country in 1963 offered him a glimpse of life under the dictatorship, and two years later, Diederich accompanied him on a journey along the border between Haiti and the Dominican Republic. These experiences became the foundation for his 1966 novel "The Comedians".
