Doyle (Sir Arthur Conan, writer, 1859-1930) Autograph postcard signed to Lady Lindsay-Hogg, in ink, 4 pp., some light spotting, 12mo, 15, Buckingham Palace Mansions, S. W. 1, 1927, a fine letter concerning spiritualism and religion, "Our relations with the Christ spirit are fairly set out in "Pheneas Speaks" and I also devote some space for it in "The Vital Message". I have never changed or concealed my opinion that Jesus was a divinely inspired man...We should humbly follow him and imitate him. The theology matters not at all...the object of religion is to influence conduct...May I say that I think it is a duty for those, who, like myself, have had proofs of the continuity of life, and who have social positions and financial means to support the cause actively... I can really say that I devote my life and fortune to nothing else, as I live to practice what I preach...The majority of mankind at this present moment do not believe it and the start of all religious reform lies in bringing it home to them. That is our duty...you have not visited my Psychic Bookshop...that alone costs me as much as a yacht would do."
⁂ Provenance: This postcard was acquired through Ms. Angela Tester, who served as Princess Nina Mdivani’s nurse during the final four years of the Princess’s life. As Princess Mdivani suffered from advanced cataracts, Ms. Tester frequently transcribed correspondence on her behalf and became a trusted member of her household. Ms. Tester is also referenced in "The Mdivani Saga", a biography of the family written by David Gigauri. Princess Mdivani was the last surviving member of the Georgian royal Mdivani family. Her second husband was Denis Conan Doyle, the son of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, creator of Sherlock Holmes. They married in 1936, and the marriage lasted until his death in India in 1955.
