Provenance: Horace Somerville Sewell (1881-1953), British Army officer (one of the few officers of African descent to serve in WWI), and grandson of the prominent Jamaican plantation owner William Sewell and Mary McCrea, a former slave (engraved armorial bookplate to front pastedown).
