Description

Restoration binding.- Book of Common Prayer (The), and Administration of the Sacraments, additional engraved title, engraved initials, ruled in red, occasional marginal pencil notes, G2, G3, H2 & 2M5 with short marginal tears, G2, G3 & H2 with small loss to lower corners, occasional light marginal finger-soiling, ink ownership inscription to front pastedown, bookplate, cracked hinges, contemporary black morocco in the style of Samuel Mearne, ?possibly by his son Samuel Mearne Jnr., double-line gilt panel to the boards with the crowned cypher of King James II within palm leaves to corners and spine compartments, elaborately decorated in blind, richly gilt spine, expert repairs to spine extremities and corners, [Wing B3679], folio, by Charles Bill, Henry Hills, and Thomas Newcomb, 1687.

⁂ A pencilled note to the front free endpaper suggests that this was bound by Samuel Mearne Jnr., and it is certainly similar to the work of his father Samuel Mearne (1624-83) in Maggs catalogue 1075, no.67.

Provenance: Ink signature of Walter Mayne, dated 1692; Armorial bookplate of John Thomas Mayne.
