Description

Surgery.- Scultetus (Johannes) Armamentarium Chirurgicum, fifth edition, additional engraved title and 43 plates by Jonas Arnold, printed title with woodcut vignette, woodcut initials and decorations, Robert J. Hayhurst's copy with his bookplate, a few plates slightly trimmed at head or foot, browning and damp-staining, upper hinge broken but contents intact, a few early ff. working loose, contemporary vellum-backed boards, manuscript title to spine, rubbed and bumped, 8vo, Venice, Combi & La Nou, 1665.

⁂ First published posthumously as a folio in 1655 from the author’s surviving notes, the work in its present form was prepared with the assistance of Schultes’ nephew, himself an accomplished surgeon. Johannes Scultetus, the distinguished German practitioner, trained at several major centres of medical learning, including Padua, where he worked alongside eminent physicians such as Adriaan van den Spiegel. The work includes the earliest known illustrations of several surgical operations still performed today and introduces a range of innovative instruments and techniques. The engravings depict treatments for fractures, as well as more complex procedures such as caesarean sections.

Provenance: From the library of the distinguished collector Robert J. Hayhurst.
