Scotland.- Collection of letters and papers of Edinburgh advocates John MacFarlane and Alexander Campbell relating to the recovery of a loan on behalf of Catherine Denise, wife of Francis Poupet ("at Mr Brewarton at the Sign of the Stove in Great York Street near St James's Church"), and daughter of Claudius Denise, London merchant, deceased, from the late Earl and Countess of Southesk, including: correspondence, including: ALs from John McFarlane to Francis Paupet, 1723; Ls from Alexander Campbell and John McFarlane, 1723: ALs from Alexander Campbell, 1727; ALs from A Hamilton, Lincolns Inn, 1725; ALs to ?Tempest, name torn and unidentified, 1728; 10 ALs.s (1 part letter only) from Martin Bladen (army officer and politician, 1680-1746) to John McFarlane, "Now I come to the Reasons why Denise will not, or perhapps can not doe anything in dischare of this affair as I have it from my Friend Mrs Poupet. Denise owes about two or £300 to diverse Persons. He has some time agoe, on the Credite of this Estate as he calls it, for wh. he has been there many years at Law, & still is", 1728-29; Legal papers & Memorials, including: "Information for Claudius Denise of London Gentleman, against James Earl of Southesque", 19th February 1705; Printed Memorials, including: Memorial for The Children of the deceast Claudius Denise, and their Factor and Assignee, 5pp., drophead title, folds, creased, edges chipped, [not in ESTC], 4th October 1720 (and 3 other printed Memorials including one duplicate, 25th November 1723 & 3rd August 1724), together c. 30 manuscript pieces and 4 printed pieces, folds, some pieces with tears, mostly to edges (1 letter with extensive tears), some pieces creased, some browned, folio and smaller, 1723-29 (c. 34 pieces).
⁂ A long running attempt by the Denise family to recover a loan made by Claudius Denise to Lady Southesk in 1686-7. Claudius Denise was a London merchant based in St Martin's in the Fields.
