Description

Desaguliers (John Theophilus) A System of Experimental Philosophy, Prov'd by Mechanicks, 10 folding engraved plates (ink writings to margin or reverse in an early hand), advertisement f. before title, 2 advertisement ff. at end, lacking preface and errata, title reinforced at gutter, light marginal browning, ink annotation to 2D2 outer margin and inscriptions to endpapers, bookplate, contemporary panelled calf, gilt spine with paper label to head, joints split, lower cover working loose, light rubbing, some wear to corners, [ESTC T135774; Wellcome, II p.451], for B. Creake and J. Sackfield, and sold by W. Mears, 1719 § Wells (William Charles) An Essay on Dew, and several appearances connected with it, second edition, presentation inscription to Robert Bingley Esq. 'from his obliged servant the Author' to title, light browning, bookplate, upper hinge starting, contemporary half calf, rubbed, wear to extremities, 1815 § Meyler (Anthony) Observations on Ventilation, and on the Defence of Health, presentation inscription 'with the author's compliments' to half-title, upper hinge cracked, original boards, paper label to spine a little chipped, rubbed, edges uncut, [1818], very occasional faint scattered spotting or staining; and a second edition of John Arbuthnot's An Essay concerning the Effects of Air on Human Bodies, 4to & 8vo (4)

⁂ The first mentioned is a reissue, after the unauthorised edition was first published. When Desaguliers discovered that earlier printing, he approached the booksellers to find that two-thirds of the imprint had already been sold. As a result, the booksellers promised to insert a preface, written by Desagulier, along with an errata f. This copy being the reissue can be demonstrated through the placement of the signature mark 'b' being placed underneath the gap after 'PAUL', whereas in the unauthorised edition, the signature mark ‘b’ is under the ‘A’ of ‘PAUL’, according to ESTC.
