Description

Duché (Jacob) Discourses on Various Subjects, 2 vol., third edition, engraved frontispieces, foxing, largely to front endpapers, frontispieces and titles, some surface soiling, else a clean copy, contemporary tree calf, spines gilt with red and navy morocco labels, joints cracking, extremities rubbed and bumped, [ESTC T127329], 1790 § Cobbe (Richard) Bombay Church, or, A true account of the building and finishing the English church at Bombay in the East Indies, one engraved folding plan, list of benefactors, gift ink inscription to front pastedown dated 1773, some spotting and browning, a few small marginal tears, hinges reinforced with tape, contemporary calf, rebacked in cloth, extremities rubbed and chipped, 1766; and c. 50 others, all 18th century English, v.s. (c.50)

⁂ The second mentioned offers a rare firsthand account of the construction of St. Thomas’s Church in Bombay—the first Anglican church in the city—detailing its founding in 1715 and completion by 1718. Cobbe frames the church not only as a place of worship for English settlers but also as a tool for converting local “heathens,” highlighting the missionary ambitions tied to imperial infrastructure.
