Juvenalia.- [Ovidius Naso (Publius)] [Metamorphoses argumentis brevioribus...], whole-page etched illustrations by Pieter van der Borcht throughout, lacking A1-3 (including title) and 4ff. elsewhere (F8, G7 & I4-5), scattered ff. with closed tears, fraying and wear-through holes (occasionally affecting text and images, but no major losses), several ff. damp-stained at rear, browning and finger soiling, contemporary calf, upper joint split and weak, [Adams O504], oblong 16mo, [Antwerp], [officina Plantiniana and Jan Moretus], [1591].
⁂ First illustrated edition of a very early juvenile. An adaption of Ovid's famous work directed at children, at times attributed to various authors, for example Aelius Donatus, often accompanying his Ars minor in manuscript schoolbooks and later Lactantius Placidus (this edition mentions on title, here lacking). The charming and detailed etchings are by Pieter van der Borcht (signed plate on p. 357) who went to work for Christopher Plantin at an early age and also designed many of his typographical ornaments.
