Emblemata.- Simeoni (Gabriel) Le sententiose imprese di monsignor Paulo Giouio..., second edition, text in Italian, woodcut illustrations throughout, title with woodcut printer's device and 17th century ink ownership inscription, a couple of ff. with closed tears (not affecting woodcut), r2-3 loose, lacking final blank, some foxing and light staining, contemporary limp vellum, spine chipped and text block nearly loose, 4to, [Adams G677; Landwehr, Romanic Emblem Books 341], Lyon, Guillaume Rouillé, 1562.

⁂ Second edition of one of the most important sixteenth-century emblem books. Renowned for its fine woodcuts including emblems for many of the most notable names of the day, largely French and Italian nobles and royals, accpompanied by four-line verse descriptions by Simeoni, replacing Giovio's original prose text.
