⁂ William James Bennett, born in England, trained in painting, sculpture, and engraving at London’s Royal Academy of Arts. Between 1808 and 1825, he actively exhibited watercolours in London and created aquatint plates for numerous illustrated books. In 1826, he immigrated to the United States, where his renown as a watercolorist earned him an associate membership in the National Academy of Design the following year. Beyond his expertise in watercolors, Bennett was also a master aquatint engraver, producing prints based on many of his own paintings.
