Description

Benson Family.- Collection of letters, comprising: (1). Benson (Edward White, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1829-96) Autograph Letter signed to Mrs Eliot, 2pp., 8vo, Truro, 15th September 1880, as Bishop of Truro, "Canon Wilkinson... . I trust that one of the curates at St James' will take him in... from this abyss of misery" (2). Benson (Mary, wife of E.W. Benson) Autograph Letter signed to Mrs. Moor, 1p. with conjugate blank, 8vo, Kenwyn, [Cornwall], 14th January 1881, invitation to dinner (3). Benson (Arthur Christopher, poet and college head, 1862-1925) Autograph Letter signed to Herbert N Hewker, 2pp. with envelope, 8vo, 7th September 1916, "I will see, when I get back to Cambridge... if I can find a letter of my father's - but I have given away so many of his that only some of the more intimate ones are left" (4). Benson (Edward Frederic, novelist, 1867-1940) Autograph Letter initialled "EFB", 3pp., 8vo, Tremans, Horsted Keynes, n.d. [c. 1920s], "The opera nights I can manage are Monday or Thursday next week... I will choose which ever is a Faust night..." (5). Benson (Robert Hugh, Roman Catholic priest and writer, 1871-1914) Autograph Postcard signed to "My Dear Sir", 2 sides, 80 x 104mm., Hare Street House, Buntingford, 20th November n.y., "But I fear that, to the best of my remembrance, my only verses bearing on Cambridge are of a somewhat humorous, & even scurrilous nature!" (6). Benson (Margaret, Egyptologist and religious philosopher, 1865-1916) Autograph Letter signed to "Miss Corrie", 3pp., s,. 8vo, Lambeth Palace, 24th June n.y. [c. 1890s], "Miss Brampton tells me that she lent you my paper about the Consumers League, removed from an album, folds, all loosely inserted into a volume by David Williams, Genesis and Exodus: A Portrait of the Benson Family, 1979, 8vo & v.s. (7 pieces).
