Description

Medicine.- Grove (John) Epidemics Examined and Explained; or Living Germs proved by Analogy to be a Source of Disease, signed presentation inscription from author to Herbert Herring on title and with his autograph "Opinions of the Press" to endpapers, Autograph Letter signed from the author to Herring tipped onto front pastedown, contemporary "Opinions of the Press" written in ink by Grove on front endpapers, scattered spotting and the odd stain, light marginal toning, front endpaper marked, contemporary half calf, black morocco label on spine, spine browned, rubbed and scuffed, 1850 § Untrodden Fields of Anthropology, 2 vol., second edition, advertisements at rear, scattered spotting and light marginal toning, a few stains, p.241 vol. 1 loosely inserted and torn, original blind-stamped cloth, rebacked preserving original backstrip, spines darkened, covers rubbed and bumped, uncut, Paris, 1898; and 3 others on anatomy and diseases, v.s (6)

⁂ The first mentioned is a lesser-known contribution to early theories of disease, notable for its attempt to explain epidemics through analogy and speculation rather than the emerging science of germ theory. Whilst not scientifically rigorous by modern standards, the book offers a glimpse into a time when ideas about disease were shifting—from the old belief in "bad air" to the early understanding of microbes.
