[Johnson (Samuel) & Christopher Smart, editor] The Student, or, The Oxford and Cambridge Monthly Miscellany, 2 vol. in 1, first edition, additional engraved titles, lacking frontispieces, vol. 1 lacking No. 8 (pp. 281-320) & vol. 2 A2&3 (pp.3-6 of No.1), front free endpaper torn away, vol. 1 with 19th century ownership inscription to verso of additional title and small ink-stamp "Hale 75" to head of printed title, vol. 2 A4 & S2 with short tear without loss, some soiling and light browning, contemporary calf-backed boards, worn with some loss, [Rothschild 1868], Oxford, for J. Newbery, 1750-51; and a defective copy of the scarce first edition of Col. David Humphrey's An Essay on the Life of the Honorable Major-General Israel Putnam (Hartford, 1788), 8vo & 12mo (2)

⁂ The first mentioned the first edition from the original nineteen parts. As in the Rothschild copy, this copy includes three numbers of The Inspector: Containing A concise and impartial Collection of News bound at the end following the second volume. Johnson contributed "The Life of Dr. Francis Cheynel" which appears in volume two. Other known contributors are Thomas Warton and Bonnell Thornton.
