Shooting.- Winans (Walter) Score at the Running Deer, Wimbledon, printed shooting scorebook with pictorial depictions of running deer target, about half filled-in in manuscript by Winans with hits marked in red and black ink dots and various notes about his scores and list of prizes on initial leaf, title with engraved vignette, original morocco, lettered in gilt on upper cover, g.e., a little rubbed, 8vo, c.1879-84.
⁂ Walter Winans (1852-1920) was an American marksman, horse breeder, sculptor and painter who competed at the 1908 and 1912 Olympics, winning a gold in 1908 and silver in 1912 for shooting. This early record of his competitive shooting at Wimbledon records that he won 3rd prize in 1880 in the Gye & Moncrieff Sporting rifles competition (7 shots, score 22) and 2nd prize in the Whitehead Military rifles competition (7 shots, score 19).
