⁂ Despite the claim on the title that the work is "faithfully translated from the Italian" it was written in English by the Catholic priest Simon Berington and first published in 1737 under the title The Memoirs of Sigr Gaudentio di Lucca. There followed a Dublin edition of 1738, a French translation of 1746, and many subsequent editions, making it one of the best-selling novels of the eighteenth century.
