⁂ Carruthers took part in a two-year expedition covering 5,000 miles to explore sources of the Yenisei river, one of the longest rivers in Asia. His account is of great value not only for its geographical researches, but also for the description of the last indigenous tribes of Siberia. Their route took the expedition to Kuldja, over the Tian-Shan into Chinese Turkestan. Carruthers was awarded the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society for his part in the expedition.
