Levant.- Tournefort (Joseph Pitton de) A Voyage into the Levant..., 2 vol., first English edition, folding engraved map by Senex (not present in the French edition) and 150 engraved plates & maps only (of 152, lacking plate at p.219 'Winter Bodice' and folding map of Delos at p.223), 5 folding, occasional spotting or soiling, cropped, folding map trimmed close, plate at p.61 in vol. trimmed to border and mounted on blank leaf, plate of Trebisonde at p.175 in vol.2 lacking small portion from upper margin (repaired), nineteenth century purple calf with central arms in gilt and border in gilt and blind, rubbed and slightly faded, rebacked with gilt spines, [Nissen ZBI 4156; cf.Atabey 959-961 & Blackmer 1318, other editions], 4to, D.Browne, A.Bell [& others], 1718.

⁂ Tournefort's botanical expedition to the Levant, sent by Louis XIV, covering Crete, Constantinople, Turkey, the Black Sea, Armenia, Persia, Georgia and Smyrna, and published a year after the original French edition.
