Owned and annotated by an 18th century midshipman.- Steel (David) The Elements and Practice of Rigging and Seamanship, 2 vol., first edition, engraved frontispiece by Neagle after Smirke, 92 engraved plates only (of 93, lacking one volvelle, the other defective), some staining and soiling, occasional chipping or tears to margins, ink ownership inscriptions of Edward Goulboun, midshipman aboard the HMS Latona with numerous ink and pencil drawings of ships to endpapers and very occasional ink or pencil notes to margins, modern half calf, spine gilt in compartments, 4to, for David Steel, 1794.

⁂ The HMS Latona served during the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary War and the Napoleonic Wars. Goulboun has sketched the ship on numerous occasions, including one drawing detailing his position at the top of a masthead.
