Sculpture.- Maffei (Paolo Alessandro) Raccolta di Statue Antiche e Moderne data in luce...da Domenico de Rossi, first edition, engraved title, pictorial dedication and 162 numbered plates by Dorigny, Francesco Aquila, Pailly and others (of 163), title soiled and with tear to fore-edge affecting border but no text (repaired), occasional marginal spotting or soiling to plates but generally very clean, some browning to text, contemporary sprinkled calf, spine gilt with red morocco label, rubbed, split to upper joint, spine ends and corners a little worn, [Brunet IV, 1406], folio, Rome, Gaetano Zenobi, 1704.

⁂ Magnificent collection of classical, Renaissance and Baroque sculpture; most of the statues depicted are ancient, but around 30 show 'modern' statues by famous sculptors such as Bernini, Giambologna, Michelangelo and others. It has been suggested that the plates of Pope Paul IV (dated 1708) and Hercules and the Hydra are later additions, the first being present here (plate 162) but not the second.
