Gauger (Nicolas) La Mechanique du Feu, title in red & black with engraved view of Rotterdam, 12 folding engraved plates of fireplaces & chimneys, lightly cockled by damp, contemporary sheep, spine gilt, a couple of gouges to cover, wormhole to spine, Amsterdam, David Mortier, 1714 § Picard (Jean) Traité du Nivellement, first edition, 3 engraved plates, errata leaf at end, contemporary calf, spine gilt, rubbed, spine ends chipped, Paris, Estienne Michallet, 1684, 8vo et infra (2)

⁂ The first concerns fireplaces and chimneys; the second is a treatise on levelling using a new instrument designed by the astronomer Picard as a by-product of his research into the measurement of the circumference of the earth. It was also used to calculate how to bring water from neighbouring rivers to the palace and park of Versailles in the 1670s.
