Description

Davenant (John, Bishop of Salisbury) Expositio epistolæ D. Pauli ad Colossenses, second edition, woodcut arms of the University of Cambridge to title, woodcut head-pieces and decorative initials, final f. blank, lacking initial blank, title with small label with letter 'Q' mounted in outer margin, first 3 ff. with small chip in upper margin, water-stained (mostly at ends), some spotting, lightly browned, contemporary calf, blind-ruled double fillet border to covers, sympathetically rebacked, spine in compartments, lower cover repaired at head, corners worn, some water-staining, rubbed and marked, [STC 6297], small folio, Cambridge, Thomas & John Buck, 1630.

⁂ Rare copy at auction of this important commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Colossians. Davenant (1572-1641), Lady Margaret's Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge (the oldest chair at the university), and Bishop of Salisbury from 1621. He represented the Church of England at the Synod of Dort in 1618 upon the request of James I.

Provenance: 'Ex libris [trimmed] Jacobi Johnston, Anno Domini, 1723' (ink inscription to front free endpaper); R. de Rosa (modern bookplate to front pastedown).
