Lockhart, Esq., first edition, 16pp. 'Family Library Advertiser' at start, half-title, engraved frontispiece, bookplate removed from pastedown with subsequent abrasion, ink-stamp "Sold by R. & J. Chambers. 48 Hanover St. Edinburgh" to blank following advertiser, frontispiece slightly offset, some spotting to frontispiece and occasionally elsewhere, original cloth, spine slightly darkened and quite worn, some staining, upper joint split and lower starting at head, small 8vo, John Murray, 1830.
⁂ Scott had maintained an interest in witchcraft and the supernatural since childhood, and agreed to write this small volume on witchcraft for Murray's 'Family Library' during a period of recuperation from illness. It constitutes No. XVI in the 'Family Library' series.
