⁂ Seemingly unrecorded. The gruesome murder of Jane Emerson with a pick axe and bill hook by William Charlton. Both had been employees of the Newcastle and Carlisle Railway. Charlton was hanged by William Calcraft on Saturday, 14th March, 1862 in front of a large crowd.
