Paul Lacroix...contenant, un curieux épisode de l'histoire des bibliothèques publiques, avec quelques faits nouveaux relatifs à M. ⁂ The second mentioned concerns Count Guglielmo Libri Carucci dalla Sommaja (1803-1869), an Italian mathematician, who was appointed Inspector of Libraries in France, and who thereafter stole the books he was responsible for. He fled to England when the theft was discovered with 30,000 books and manuscripts in 18 trunks. In France, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison in absentia. Some of the stolen works were returned upon his death, but many remained unaccounted for.
